The Newarke Houses Museum consists of two sixteenth century houses that display a wonderful variety of topics and exhibitions from early modern to contemporary Leicestershire history. It also includes the museum of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment.

Although it currently remains closed due to Covid restrictions, the museum hopes to reopen to the public on 21 June, 2021.

Stefanie Tyler-Divine is the Operations Officer at Newarke Houses Museum.

What is your favourite thing about working at Newarke Houses Museum and what are the biggest challenges?

I like working with the public and seeing the pleasure on people’s faces when they enjoy their visit. Managing expectations can be a challenge though.

What career path did you take before working at Newarke Houses Museum?

I was at Leicester University and came here straight after that and have been at Newarke Houses for 27 years.

Have you always been interested in working in the museum sector?

I was unsure of what I wanted to do after university but got this job and have stayed in Museums for over half my life now so I must find it rewarding.

What does a typical working day look like for you? Or is there a ‘typical’ day?

I normally work 8.30-4.30pm but need to be flexible in that I do have to stay late sometimes and work weekends, but I do not mind doing this. Yes, a typical day is quite rare.

Do you have any advice for people wanting to work in museums, galleries, and heritage sites in the future?

I would recommend working in Museums especially if you are passionate about it. You spend a lot of time at work, so it is important to be doing something you enjoy. However, you do need to ensure you are adaptable and need to be able to embrace changes in a positive way.
