You want to submit a piece? Amazing! Below are some guidelines to help you out.

-
Tone and audience
-
The MAGS Mag is aimed at current, past, and future students of Museum Studies and Art Museum and Gallery Studies.
-
As it is written by students for students, so we aim to have a relaxed and fairly informal tone.
-
Avoid slang or unnecessarily complicated terms, as future/prospective students won’t have the museum-related knowledge of current/past student.
-
-
Word count
-
We will publish three main lengths of article: 300 word, 500 word, and 800 word.
-
300 word articles could be a brief review of a book/exhibition/podcast/film etc.
-
500 word articles could be personal reflection on student life or an aspect of the course.
-
For articles of 800 words please send us an email at MAGS_mag@outlook.com – we are happy to publish longer pieces after hearing your proposal.
-
Overall, these word counts are guidelines and depending on your desired topic, can be very flexible.
-
-
Topics
-
The magazine is split into three sections: interviews, student life, and reviews & recommendations
-
Interviews:
-
These will be conducted over email with alumni and staff by committee members using a pre-agreed set of interview questions.
-
If you have a connection or suggestion for someone to interview, then please email us.
-
-
Student life:
-
This can include: reflections on the course, accommodation stories, advice for future students, blogs about placement or certain modules, distance learning experiences, moving to the UK/Leicester, previous or current job experience.
-
Send us an email if you wish to write about another aspect of student life and we’ll be happy to discuss it further.
-
-
Reviews & Recommendations:
-
Do you have something to say about an exhibition (virtual or physical) that you visited? Have you recently been listening to a great podcast? Did you watch a thought provoking documentary? What books would you recommend to a friend?
-
This section aims to be a place to share and discuss museum and non-museum related culture.
-
Begin with a summary of the exhibition/podcast/film/book before offering your thoughts and opinions on it.
-
The summary should include the author/podcast host/director/curator as well as the name of your chosen piece and the date it was created. If possible, include a link to the source.
